When the US version of ‘The Office’ first hit screens, many seriously lamented whether Steve Carell could ever replace Ricky Gervais as the cringeworthy office manager.

Now, with the news that Steve will be leaving the hit TV show, apparently executive producers of ‘The Office’ have seriously banded the idea around that Ricky could replace Steve as Dunder Miflin. Funny old world innit?

Paul Lieberstein, who also plays Toby in the show, told New York Magazine that they have considered luring the original Office creator back to reprise his role as David Brent.

“We talked about it today for a while,” he said. ”It’s not the leading idea... [but] it’s not a dead idea.

“I don’t know how David Brent could take Michael Scott’s place because it would be a little bit too much of a coincidence that a documentary crew was also following him.”

He added: “He was also fired for incompetence [in the UK Office], so we’d have to create some back story for what happened.

“On the flip side, you have someone who’s incredibly talented and who has played with a level of realism that’s the same as our show.”

Gervais isn’t so sure though. He recently joked: “Why would I get up at 6am five days a week for seven years when I can hire someone else to do that and still get my syndication money?”

Gervais recently finished the pilot for his new sitcom ‘Life’s Too Short’ starring ‘showbiz dwarf’ Warwick Davis. Now to write the rest of the series…!
