Comedian Patrice O'Neal has died at the age of 41.

O’Neal, who recently featured in the ‘Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen’, died from complications arising from a stroke. His representatives released the following statement:

“It is with terrible sadness we must report that Patrice O'Neal has passed away this morning at 7:00am due to the complications of the stroke he suffered on October 19. Many of us have lost a close and loved friend; all of us have lost a true comic genius.”

Charlie Sheen mourned the loss of the star in a short blog post.



"The entertainment world as well as the world at large lost a brilliant man today," he wrote.

"Patrice had that rare 'light' around him and inside of him. I only knew him for the few days leading up the Roast. Yet I will forever be inspired by his nobility, his grace and his epic talent. My tears today are for the tremendous loss to his true friends and loving family."

Fellow comedians have posted their condolences on Twitter.

"An amazing comedian and an even better person. RIP Patrice O'Neal," wrote Nick Cannon.

Dane Cook shared, "I started my career w/ Patrice O'Neal. He was 1 of the best ever. Fond memories of road gigs, late night eats & laughs.”

"One of my favourite stand up comedians. So sad. RIP," tweeted Ricky Gervais.

Sarah Silverman wrote "RIP Patrice O'Neal. You made us laugh til we cried."

"Brilliant, unafraid, unapologetic. You inspired me and kept us all honest #RIPPatrice," continued Amy Schumer, who shared the stage with O'Neal at the Sheen Roast.

As well as enjoying a successful stand-up career, O'Neal appeared in a number of films and TV shows including ‘Arrested Development’, ‘The Office’ and ‘Scary Movie 4’.

RIP Patrice, you’ll be missed.
